Change Your Keyboard Layout Not satisfied with your computer keyboard layout? KeyTweak is free software that allows you to customize the keys on your keyboard. If you change your mind and want to change it again, you can easily reset all your cards with just one click. You can also deactivate keys, activate others, and save your override with just a few. All you need to do is run the installer exe, then follow the onscreen instructions, including accepting the license agreement. You then go to the Start menu and find the KeyTweak submenu. There you will also find a manual and the uninstaller application. To launch the application, simply click on the KeyTweak item in the KeyTweak menu. How to use KeyTweak When you open KeyTweak, the main window displays an image of a keyboard, along with a menu bar, a Remapping section, a Keyboard Control section, a Specialized Buttons section, a Pending Changes section, and buttons to switch between full and partial learning modes. You can also access the KeyTweak manual here from the Help menu. Please note that the assigned keyboard is not specific to your keyboard; it is universal. Under the menu bar at the top of the window, the Remapping section contains a list of keys and buttons currently remapped to restore default settings and display the Raw; The keyboard controls are where you can select the new remapping for a chosen key. You can do this via a drop-down list and a Remap button. The dedicated buttons on the right side of the window allow you to remap some (not all) of the special buttons your keyboard may have, such as movie playback controls. In the lower right corner, the Pending changes area displays all the changes that will take effect the next time you restart your computer. The Full / Half Teaching Mode buttons at the bottom of the window allow you to toggle between the two respective teaching modes. It corresponds to a key on your own keyboard and has its own number. Once you click on the virtual key, you will see the current assignment in the Keyboard Controls section. You then click the Reassign button and you will see that reassignment appear in the Pending Changes section. Anychanges you make with KeyTweak must be restarted to take effect. You can repeat this process for as many keys as you want, make new assignments, or turn off a key’s function. After restarting, your keyboard will be mapped as you defined while using the program. KeyTweak is especially great for redefining individual keys and fixing minor keyboard annoyances, rather than changing the behavior of your entire keyboard. Keep in mind that the changes you make in KeyTweak are global, so they affect all users on a device. Full Learn mode is an alternate method of reassigning your chosen keys. When you click on the Full Learn Mode button, a new window opens. After clicking Start Learn Mode, you can select a key on your actual manual keyboard for one location (# 1) and a second key for another location (# 2), then remap # 1 to # 2. Half Teach mode was not useful as it is essentially the same method as the standard method for remapping keys. Does KeyTweak have any limitations? KeyTweak cannot combine keys, for example you cannot assign Ctrl-Alt-Del to a single key press. It also does not affect the function keys on laptops or the pause / pause key.
